Welcome!

I love to ask questions, analyze texts, do research, and write up what I’ve learned. It’s why I became an English professor. This site is a place for me to share ongoing research and writing projects, reflections on texts and circumstances, as well as links to my publications. I hope you enjoy reading along as I discover, interpret, and explore!

During summer 2023, I will be cooking my way through The Joy of Sharing, a cookbook published in 1985 by the Oak Valley American Lutheran Church Women of Velva, North Dakota, to celebrate the centennial of Oak Valley Lutheran Church.

Please visit the site to find blog posts offering pictures of recipes, commentary on the cooking process, as well as information about the contributor. Later posts will offer selected interviews with available contributors.

If you’re a first-time visitor, start with the two featured posts on the “Cookbook Project” page for an introduction to the project and the cookbook. Additional posts will be found in the links to recent posts and categories on the right side of the page.

As cultural and food historian Megan J. Elias explains, “cookbooks, like any other genre of literature, have something to tell us about our times.” I’m eager to examine what The Joy of Sharing reveals about women’s lives in central North Dakota in the mid-1980s.
